Asia Kakehashi Scholarship japan - Fully Funded

The Asia Kakehashi Project (kakehashi is a Japanese word mean"bridging") was announced in 2017 by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe  to strengthen ties between Japan and the rest of Asia. The program offers full scholarships to Asian high school students to live and study in Japan. The first 100 students arrived in Japan in August 2018, and the number and duration of the program is increasing.

Eligibility Criteria:

AFS Japan team has made some points on which they are trying to filter out the applicants. So the applicants must have to follow the below-given criterion in order to apply for Japan Scholarships.

Eligible Countries:

Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Republic of Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, India, India, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam

Other requirements:

  1. Applicants must be 15 to 18 years of age.
  2. Applicants must have to born after April 2, 2002 and before April 1, 2005
  3. Applicants must have the nationality of the sending country
  4. Applicants should have obtained min. 60% marks in the latest exams
  5. Applicants should have a Japanese language learner
  6. Applicants should have a strong potential of leadership
  7. Applicants should not participated  in the ASIA KAKEHASHI program  
  8. If you have a low family income then you have more chance of selection

Who would be funding this scholarship?

AFS Japan has been selected by the national Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to carry out the Asia-Pacific project for understandings between scholars from Japan and 20 other Asian countries and regions began to emerge. The government-funded program provides full scholarships to Asian high school students to attend a government high school in Japan. Along with their thousands of Japanese friends, these students will develop their knowledge of each other's abilities and countries around the world.

What kind of candidates they are looking for?

This scholarship is ideal for students who have excellent academic records, a strong desire to study abroad and an interest to participate in school-based activities. Strong candidates will be ready to be immersed in the cultural training experience during the program. Applicants should be studying the Japanese language. AFS is committed to diversity and encourages students from all backgrounds to apply.

Expenses which would not be covered by the scholarship:

  1. Vaccines and other medical tests and certificates
  2. Travel expenses to the local Japanese Consulate to obtain a visa
  3. Spend extra money
  4. Fees for extra or larger items

Where the participant would live during this program?

Asia Kakehashi program students will live in hostels or with host families. Participants cannot choose their location. Short-term hosts during the holidays will be for families and partners staying at the dorms.


Who will support the participants during the program?

All participants will be assisted by AFS Japan’s volunteers and professional staff from Japan. AFS will organize cultural trends and other local activities. All students will attend a carefully selected high school that works closely with AFS.
